Introduction to Quilting with Andrea Torrens

Monkland Quilt Studio is collaborating with Andrea Torrens to bring you a beginner quilting class!

So many of you have reached out saying that you would like a class to learn to quilt,  hone your skills, or unlearn some habits picked up by watching amateur tutorials.  I’m excited to say that we finally have dates set for 2 upcoming courses, and all participants will receive a special discount code to use for their supplies purchased at MQS.

The classes will be offered live over Zoom with a strict low-enrollment (6 students) policy, which ensures that each participant will receive individual attention from Andrea, and have the opportunity to ask real-time questions… no more struggling on your own through pre-recorded lessons!  The beginner class will cover how to:

  • purchase coordinating fabrics,
  • use rotary cutting equipment safely and efficiently,
  • sew pieces accurately,
  • use proper pressing technique,
  • machine quilt with a walking foot,
  • square up and bind a quilt.

This is a machine course, but no prior sewing experience is necessary. The beginner project is a set of 4 placemats, which enables students to start with a manageable, useful product, as well as progressively improve your technique.

The next session will begin on Thursday, May 12, 2022.

Cost of the 4 week course is $150, and is payable directly to Andrea Torrens.  Once registration fees have been paid, you will receive an email from MQS with your discount code.  Shop online, or book an appointment to get personalized service in selecting your fabrics and tools.

To register, email aetorrens67@gmail.com

Again, registration numbers are very limited.  If you are unable to secure a spot, please email us at hello@monklandquiltstudio to be put on a waiting list for the next class offering.

Meet Andrea Torrens!

“I have been a passionate, addicted quilter, designer, and bag maker for almost 25 years. I love to design my own quilts and develop my own techniques, but more than anything I love to share my enthusiasm, knowledge and expertise with others who are curious about quilting. Over the past 15 years, I have become a well-respected teacher, offering classes locally and provincially, and now thanks to Zoom, I can teach internationally!

I joined the Beaconsfield Quilters’ Guild in 2000, and have been an active member on the executive board for 18 years, including the positions of President, and Program Coordinator. I have attended numerous seminars over the years, and taken many quilting classes with internationally renowned instructors. I have exhibited my quilts locally and provincially and have been the lucky recipient of several winning ribbons!

I offer both in-person, and live, interactive online quilting classes on Zoom, from Introductory to Advanced. Beginner classes are limited in size to no more than six people, allowing me to give personal attention to each and every one of my students. My focus is to share the tips and tricks that I have picked up and developed over my years at my sewing machine, to help others to improve their precision in quiltmaking and to make the process most efficient. I strive for a fun, informative and supportive classroom environment allowing everyone to work at their own pace. Through my years of teaching, I realize that every student brings a variety of strengths, skill levels, and needs, and I like to use different approaches to help each individual student achieve success. Together, let's enjoy the journey, as well as the end product!”
